Alcohol/Drug Addiction

Alcohol/Drug Addiction
It's well known that about 60-70% of those with disorder also have an addiction problem, too, whether it be drugs or alcohol.

I am a recovering alcoholic. The only proven treatment that works for this disease is AA; willpower alone won't do it. Many in my AA community have not only been addicted to alcohol, but also drugs. Alcohol is only a legal drug. Many have found that AA works for them better than NA for the drug addiction. I can't count the number of people who state "I'm so-and-so and I'm an alcoholic/addict.

Many of us grew up in alcoholic families; many of us carry the gene for this (as is the case with me). Bipolar is also genetic, but it does take something to trigger it and anything can be a trigger at any age. Same with alcohol/drugs, I think, in my experience.

AA is about alcoholism, but many times alcohol leads directly to drug use. Therefore, AA accepts alcoholics/addicts though it requests that topics stick with the alcohol part.

Since I've given up alcohol and am working the AA program, I've found that this alleviates some crappy bp symptoms, along with helping my meds work better.

Anyone else want to comment on this Dual Diagnosis?

RE: Alcohol/Drug Addiction
Many people who find themselves in the grips of a serious dependency on alcohol or drugs enter a drug and alcohol treatment centre to be rehabilitated and treated for addiction without understanding the full measure of the delicate procedure in such a treatment centre. Drug use is a very common reality in all cultures worldwide. Rave parties, dinner parties, birthdays, New Year, office parties: often we celebrate these occasions with social drug use and alcohol abuse.

RE: Alcohol/Drug Addiction
I've always wondered where alcohol rates as an addictive substance compared to tobacco and other drugs. I know people have lots of problems quitting smoking and it does seem to have a lot to do with the individuals will power and character traits. But while there are many ways to quit smoking, there aren't many for alcohol addiction.
